Was chatting to a friend of mine, from Tuition classes... Marathi tuition classes of standard Xth... Although the subject itself was crap, it brought back great memories... Those carefree days...
Back in school days in India(Mumbai), the Xth standard is considered to be the first of the most important years in education, from here you decide what field you step into. Science, Art or Commerce... A lot depends on how well you score and everyone strives hard to get the right marks to get into their dream college... Tuition classes start more than a year in advance, children skip play and keep studying. Well, atleast it used to be like that; these days with the Internet and console gaming, there is no telling whats kids are really doing in their room. :)
Anyways, I defied rules even then. I had no dream college and like a normal kid, I only wanted to play. It wasn't easy to be in the room and pretend to study, because their was no Internet and no video games. So I had to step out to have fun, and I must admit, I was very out-standing...!!! :) Considering the fact I used to go to play cricket even during my board exams (when everyone else was tensed and cramming info at home), it is impressive that I turned out alright... ;)
Talking about Marathi Tuition classes, ma'am was great! I still go and meet her every time I am down, and she still can't believe I did well for myself... :) Well, I guess she knew that I would do good, and hence let me fool around... I used to trouble her so much... If the tuition was from 5pm to 6pm, I used to reach there at 6pm. Then I used to keep my bag, and go down with my tuition friends and play building cricket. Poor Shaila aunty (ma'am) used to keep screaming for me to come up, so that she could teach me something...!!! Anyways, once I had played enough, I used to go up and then she would start all over again to teach me. I used to hate prose, and with poetry, I used to get her to translate everything into English. So for the exam, I read stuff in English and then hoped to convert some thing back into Marathi and write it down...!!! Oh yes, every once in a while, I used to stop reading and go into the Kitchen and help out. She used to make damn cool sweets... Anyways, it was a shock to everyone (and me too actually), when I got 4 marks more in Marathi than in English for the final board exam... lol... Still can't believe it...!
This was just with Marathi classes, if I start with my other tuition class for Maths/Science, I could fill another couple of paras... lol...
During the school summer vacations, I used to get up at 6am (never got up on time for school), get ready and go to play Badminton... 2-3hrs of Badminton... Then back home, shower, snacks and then off again to play some building cricket, or carrom or table tennis... Then back home for lunch, take another shower if dirty... Then out again to someone house (or friends come over to my house) to watch a film or play some indoor stuff. Then at 4pm out on to the field for cricket. At times it could be volleyball if the big bullies were not on the field... :) And we played till it got dark, then back home for another shower (as u can see, very hygienic!), and then OUT AGAIN to meet the gal pals... lol... Time for some good ol' games like chor-police, sakali, etc etc... Chit-chatting started once the tom-boy type girls starting becoming more like girls... lol... Then games reduced and there were walks around the colony and stuff... Back then, being in a all boys school, it was all ok... ;) Because, there was no PS3 or Wii or XBox then, so we actually played...!!! And enjoyed to the full...
Its amazing how fast time has flown... The vacations were so exciting, practically out of the house the whole day, playing and enjoying with friends... School times were also good if you look back now... Those were the care free days... And the summer after the Xth board exams were the last of these amazing days... All back in the summer of 1997...
